Grace Anderson

Oregon, USA

I was raised in the Yakima valley in Washington state with parents and siblings who delved into artsy craftsy things.  I attended three colleges in Portland, Oregon, graduating with a diploma from one and a BS in secondary English education, then moved to Southern Oregon, where I reside.  I proudly have two grown children and three wonderful grandchildren; all live less than 30 minutes away.  I have no dog, not since the kids were small, but had a Sealpoint Siamese cat that lived with me as a wonderful buddy for 18 years.  For most of my adult life I have been a seamstress, designer, and teacher of some 18 different sewing/quilting/craft/ embroidery related subjects.   About 17 years ago, there was an abrupt, swiftly moving change in my life (a God thing) and I became a longarm machine quilter.  I create original designs for patterns and quilting design workbooks that I use in my business and teach to other machine quilters, teaching in both my home studio and at large quilt venues.  Hundreds of clients and hundreds, maybe thousands, of quilts later, I am still inspired and thrilled to see what happens in the quilt world.  My quilts are entered in local and regional quilt shows and I even had an article printed in a national quilt magazine last year.  I love my "job".

Karen Brown

New York, USA

I am Karen Brown from Gloversville, New York in the Foothills of the Adirondacks. The handsome fellows on the bridge are Rush and Harrigan Garth.   Rush was adopted from a friend who had an abundance of wonderful Airedales. Harrigan came from D and D Norwich Terriers in Pennsylvania.   He feels it is his responsibility to keep Rush’s life interesting. The bridge is the creation of my partner, Jim.   Jim just retired from 39 years of helping to keep our submarine fleet operating smoothly. That translates to lots more farm project time for me to continue renovating our 1830’s farm house and outbuildings.  It also means that the pressure will be on to plan my own retirement.   I just celebrated my 40th year working with the Fulton County ARC.   The majority of that time has been spent as a Residential Director working with developmentally disabled adults. I have been a member of the Airedale Terrier Quilting Bee since 2000.  It is a thrill to work with this creative and talented group of women who are passionate about Airedales.  This year’s block was inspired by my two wonderful dog groomers who my boys love almost as much as they love me.

Sharon DeBoer

Oregon/Alaska, USA

Hi, I’m Sharon. I live in Southern Oregon, and am fortunate to be able to provide full time care for my 93 year old mother.  Mom still owns the home in Anchorage, Alaska, that she and my dad built, where I was born and raised. In the summers we commute between Oregon and Alaska so we can enjoy the best of The Last Frontier, but still be in Oregon when the blackberries and peaches are ripe! During the winter, we stay close to Oregon.
Biscuit is my first Airedale.  I wish I could say I choose the perfect puppy right out of the gate, but I have to admit instead, my Airedale chose me.  As I sat on the lawn, wondering if there was a puppy that I would be interested in, a little female crawled up on my lap and went to sleep. She went home with me that day. Biscuit is now 6 years old, and she is everything I could have hoped for in a companion and four-legged best friend.  She has brought humor, intensity, love and joy to my life as only an Airedale can.  I hope that I am at least close to being the human SHE thought I would be!
In the winter my 90 pound Biscuit looks more like an Airedale, because she’s groomed in the standard cut.  However, in the summer she sports a “close crop”, so we can enjoy running through the woods, swimming in the river, and just playing outside together.  Less time on the grooming table means more time to play – every dog knows THAT!
Quilting is my passion. I remember as a child, sitting under the big quilting frame while the Ladies Aid at grandma’s church hand quilted for people. My first quilt was made about 30 years ago, and I bought my first long arm quilting machine just over 10 years ago. I’m involved in several guilds and quilting groups, and was very pleased to discover that I could combine my love of quilting with my love for Airedales! This year I was responsible for coordinating the finish work on the quilt, tying off all of the threads on the surface, sewing on the binding, the label, and adding a sleeve so it can be hung. How rewarding to be able to help Airedales in need by doing what I love!

Lavonne DeBoer

Oregon/Alaska, USA

Hello, I’m Lavonne DeBoer.  I am 93 years old.  I was born and raised on a farm in southeast South Dakota, worked in a factory in Los Angeles during World War II (think Rosie The Riveter - I replaced a man who was drafted), and in 1947, after the War, I moved to the territory of Alaska with my husband, just for the summer.  We never left.  Six years ago I moved in with my daughter, Sharon, when my husband of almost 65 years passed away.
When I was 13 years old, my parents sent me to a boarding school in White Lake, South Dakota, where I learned how to sew.  I’m one of the oldest of 10 children, and mom wanted help making clothes for all the kids.  In 1934, when I was 16 years old, I pieced my first quilt.  It was a LeMoyne Star, out of Depression Era fabrics.  No one bothered to tell me that was much too hard of a pattern for a first project!   I kept it in a shoebox, because I didn’t know how to hand quilt.  When I married Vernon, my new mother-in-law offered to help me finish it.  It is featured in the book, “Rotary Roundup”, and is also shown as one of the quilts in the cabinet on the cover of the book.  I still have the quilt.  I love machine piecing and hand quilting.  I’ve made more quilts than I can count.  Right now I’m working on an applique quilt, and am finishing the redwork on embroidered blocks for another quilt.  Sharon says I make blocks faster than she can sew them into quilts!
I didn’t even know what an Airedale was until I met Biscuit, Sharon’s dog.  Biscuit seems to know when she wants to play rough, she has to do that with Sharon, but I’m always good for some scratches behind the ears.  She also knows that I like a Klondike bar after every dinner and she can have a little if she asks.
This year I helped knot and bury all the quilting threads on the surface of the quilt.  I want to help make sure that other dogs like Biscuit have a comfortable life, and if I can do that with quilting, then we’re all happy!

Rebecca Eash

Wisconsin, USA

Rebecca Eash lives in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin with her husband of over 30 years.  They have two grown daughters.  Her very first dog, Chuckles, is now a healthy, happy ten year old bundle of Airedale enthusiasm! Her family also includes two calico cats, Kiwi and Tina, rescued from the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS). Rebecca has been sewing since she was a little girl but is just beginning her journey as a quilter. She has worked on the last few Airedale Rescue quilts and really enjoys being part of the Internet Quilting Bee.  Currently Rebecca is a volunteer in her community and is enjoying her "empty nest".  Besides spoiling Chuckles, Rebecca enjoys watching silent movies, researching her family’s genealogy, and restoring her 1876 Victorian Italianate house.  She is also a member of the Wisconsin Airedale Terrier Club.

Patty Eisenbraun

Michigan, USA

I am not a quilter, but an Airedale lover. A friend gave us our first Airedale 38 years ago and I’ve been smitten with them since then. 16 years ago I stumbled upon Airedale rescue and it changed our lives dramatically.  One huge part of being involved in Airedale Rescue has been the caring people I’ve met and the varied opportunities presented to be able to support Rescue throughout the world.  The Quilting Bee is one of those rare groups that allow me to use my art talents and give back to Rescue in a big way.
We have had 8 Airedales live with us in the last 16 years and fostered several.  We continue to help with Airedale Rescue in Michigan and are also helping with Wire Fox Terrier Rescue as well.  In addition to Toby, a five-year-old Airedale, we have two WFT’s, Buddy and Lucy.  We also have adopted a cat after losing our old, 23 year old Chloe.   Bob, our cat looks like a WFT in his coloring and – he acts like one!!  He certainly rules the roost, but all 4 “kids” get along great.
By trade I am a graphic artist and my dessert in life is painting in oils.  My website is: www.pattyeisenbraun.com.

Between volunteering for rescue and other groups, enjoying my grandchildren and painting, I’m now working on a dream project illustrating a series of children’s books and creating characters for a licensing line.
Being involved with the Quilting Bee is something I just can’t say no to!  Watching each quilt go from discussion to the finished stage is an amazing process to be part of.  The talent and heart of the Quilters is amazing.

Jeanne Esmond

Virginia, USA

I live in Herndon Virginia with two Airedales, Sandy and Wooley Juan (both rescues) and my son Chris.

I made two blocks this year the TELEFIX block and the gazebo in the park. When we decided to do blocks with Airedales and stores, I knew I had to make the Telefix block.
I lost my old girl Katie last year just shy of 14 years old. She was very ill the last year of her life and the only place she would walk was down the street to Telefix.  Jay and Pat kept a huge box of dog biscuits for whatever dog should happen in.  Jay fed Katie 12+ biscuits every time we came in.  Poor Sandy was starting to look like a stuffed Airedale when I cut him off of whole biscuits. He only got half biscuits from then on.
Telefix has closed since the quilt was completed a victim of cheap TVs.  The Town misses their generous spirits and good humor!
This block is made to honor them and my Katie whose wicked sense of humor and exuberant ways personify all that is good about Airedales

I live in Panama City Beach, FL. Home of white sands and the crystal clear Gulf of Mexico. At this time I do not have a residential Airedale however, Rufus who belongs to my son, is at work with us each day at our sign business. His main job is greeting the customers, which he does with gusto, putting both front paws on the front counter .I have participated in most of the quilt projects for Airedale Rescue. What a wonderful group of folks working together for the dales we love.

Jeanette Grantner

Colorado,USA

I am Jeanette Grantner from Canon City, CO.  I have been involved with the Bee since 2005 when I lived in New Jersey. I was a med-surg and geriatric nurse when I was active in nursing.  I have been sewing since I was 10 years old.  Quilting turned out to be more of a challenge than I anticipated.  My first quilt block was for WOTA in 2005.
2006 Friends – The Doberman, one of my favorites
     2007 Vers-Airedale-ity – Companion
2008 A Day in the Life – Berries
2009 Fairey Tails – Red Riding Hood, another favorite
     2010 A is for Airedale – U is for Up, a favorite
2012 Garden Party Maggie eating sunflowers
2013 Airedales Around Town – Dairey Delights
Maggie is now ten and the center of our empty nesters’ lives.  If she isn’t getting the attention she thinks is due, she’ll do something devious or clownish.  She has been my personal therapy dog. She makes me laugh by her antics.  She knows to rest when I rest.  She also is a clock for (her) meal time.

Linda Hobbet

Illinois, USA

I've been a student of dogs all my life.  According to Mom, my second word was 'dog' and there wasn't even one in the family at the time. I love learning about the evolution of dogs, their biology and behavior, the different breeds and their histories, and all the ways humankind and caninekind have partnered together over the millennia.  As an artist, dogs are one of my favorite subjects. I had a variety of dogs over the years and loved them all, but I didn't get my first Airedale until 1990.  Do you remember that old V-8 commercial where a guy takes a sip, slaps his head, and exclaims 'I could have had a V-8?' That's the way I felt.  All those years when I could have had an Airedale! I currently live with my third and fourth Airedales.  Eight-year-old Lola (Ch Stirling Laughing Out Loud) and three-year-old Punch (Gr Ch Kyna's Queensberry Rules). I enjoy participating in dog sports with my dogs, but I confess to being a lazy trainer.  I do tracking and agility with Punch and obedience with Lola. One of these days we'll get around to entering trials :-).  I've been involved with the Quilt since 2004. I enjoy working on these labors of love with a great community of Airedale enthusiasts.

Libby Karier

Illinois, USA

I am Libby Karier and live in Chicago with my husband, Garry Low, and the unflappable, unbeatable, indefatigable Molly.

My first Airedale, Fagan, came from a shelter.  Because of him I fell in love with the breed and became involved with Airedale Rescue.

Miss M. came to us as a ‘short-term’ foster more than 11 years ago.  Her supercharged energy level made prospective adopters blanch and it soon became apparent that her temporary stay would be a permanent one.

But that high energy level has served her well on our camping, hiking and canoeing trips.  My husband and I are also avid cyclists, and while Molly has not gone on any bicycle trips, she has enjoyed helping us train for them.

My interests – beyond Airedales and Airedale rescue – include reading, traveling and gardening; a year ago I achieved my goal of turning the entire yard into garden and selling the lawn mower.  I support the quilt through the  “ Back office” because sewing machines and I have a relationship that is not unlike Charlie Brown and his kite.  I am in awe of the work the quilters produce and am extremely fortunate to see proof of that work daily – you see, my name was on the winning ticket for the 2007 quilt, Cirque du Sol’Aire

Rose Knowles

Britsh Columbia, Canada

I live in Victoria,BC, Canada. My husband and I owned a very special Airedale named Pepper.  She came into our lives at 14 weeks when her previous owners were unable to keep her.   For 13 years, Pepper went everywhere with us with no questions asked and always ready for fun.  I chose this block as dashing off with objects was one of Pepper’s favourite tricks. She never managed to steal sausages from a butcher shop but her first Christmas she did dash off with the leg of our turkey!
As we were not able to have another large dog, we chose a female Welsh Terrier.  We have found that Megan has many Airedale characteristics packed into a much smaller body. We are often asked, “Is this a miniature airedale?”
I began quilting in 1998 when I retired from teaching.  While searching quilting sites, I came across “Annette’s House” and the ADT Rescue group.  I was immediately attracted and this worthy cause.  This is the 7th block I have contributed “In Memory of Pepper”.

Candy Kramlich

Jarrettsville, Maryland

My love affair with Airedale Terriers began in 1975 when, newly married, we were given an Airedale puppy as a gift.  Little did I know then how Airedales would impact my life from that time forward.  Trihorn Juliana, CD (Jul) was a very sweet and steady Airedale.  Then there was her son, Baerjager Hawkeye, CD (Bear), my gentle giant at 27 ½ inches, and her daughter, Ch. Baerjager Ariel, my spitfire.  Both Bear and his mother, Jul, were shown in obedience and earned CD titles.  Ariel was our only champion, owner-handled to half of her championship.
I am new to quilting, but not new to Airedale Rescue.  I coordinated Airedale Rescue for the Greater Denver Airedale Terrier Club from the late 1970’s when the club was founded until I moved to New York in 1986.  Then I coordinated Airedale Rescue for southern NY for the Airedale Terrier Club of Metropolitan NY for 17 + years.  When I was National Airedale Rescue Treasurer for 5 years, I saw firsthand how very important the Quilting Bee is because the revenue generated by the yearly quilt raffle allows National Airedale Rescue to continue to help the thousands of Airedales in need across the country.  It would not have been possible without the help generated by the Quilting Bee.
After relocating to northern Maryland in mid-2009, I adopted Pinky (Buonaires Tuscadero), a 6 ½ yr. old female in March 2012.  She’s a very sweet, affectionate girl who has brought JOY back into my life after a major lifetime change.  My Airedales and all those Airedales I fostered over the years have brought me so much joy and most of my closest friends are people I met through my Airedales.  Airedales have played a major role in my adult life and I’d be lost without that component in my lifestyle.  Each dog has left its paw prints on my heart.  What a gift this breed has brought to my life over the last 38 years!
I enjoyed making this 2nd block and it was inspired by Pinky, hence the name “Pink’s Bakery”.  When I got Pinky, she had to be crated and I’d give her a couple of special dog biscuits as “bye bye” cookies when I’d leave for work.  I was given a wonderful dog biscuit recipe that Pink loved so one day I made them.  The predominant ingredients are oatmeal, bananas and peanut butter.  The next day I gave her couple when I went to work, but I couldn’t find Pinky.  After a quick check of the main floor, I found her sitting in her open crate waiting for her cookies!!  I just had to burst out laughing.  Well, a year later she no longer needs to be crated, but she still gets her “bye bye” cookies when I leave.  She goes to her dog bed in the bedroom and waits as soon as she hears the cookie jar lid open.  She is now 7 ½ years young and her favorite activities are playing w/her soft flex ball and hunting in her backyard – there are loads of bunnies this year and she’s constantly on the hunt, often glued to the rock wall where they burrow.  I had to resort to stringing an 8-panel exercise pen along the rock wall to keep her out of there.

Nancy Messier

Ohio, USA

I'm Nancy Messier.  My husband, Michael, and I live in central Ohio with our Airedale, Hannah.  Hannah is a rescue 'dale who came to our home five years ago when she was two.  She arrived without people skills, language skills, or indoor living skills.  In addition, she was fearful of everything and distrustful of everyone.   Within 24 hours she seemed to have adopted me as her leader, protector, and the love of her life.  They say dogs don't give hugs but they don't know Hannah.   She puts her paws on my lap and leans her head tight against my chest or curves her head around my neck.  She's overcome so many fears, does well in many circumstances, and has finally started giving Michael hugs, too, one of the fondest desires of his heart.  She brings joy to our lives every day.

I've contributed to the Airedale Rescue Quilting Bee for several years now and am grateful for the opportunity to help support Airedales-in-need in this way.

I live in Seattle, WA with my 7yr old Airedales, Dave and Sophie.  I’ve had Airedales for over 25 yrs and they are my favorite breed of dog.   Dave loves Frisbee and Sophie loves tennis balls, more than food or any other toy.  I’ve been with the Quilt Bee for 10yrs.  I have made memory books, named quilts, and do the behind the scenes incentive promo work.  I also fundraise and manage the money for the Bee from the sale of Airedale Quilt patterns.
I am also known as Auntie Lydia, and that was the bonus quilt for 2004 “Waiting for Auntie Lydia’s Kookies”.  You can now buy that pattern online. This year I was in charge of ticket ordering and Bee money manager.

Lori and her husband, Ron Swisher, live with Scarlett, their 2-yr-old Airedale; Claire, their 1-yr-old Airedale; and Bandit, their 4-yr-old, field-bred English Setter.  Ron and Scarlett enjoy retriever and upland bird training and plan to enter hunt tests this fall.   Lori was thrilled to adopt Claire in late August 2012 and since that time, they have been enjoying lots of obedience and agility classes.  This past spring, Claire received her AKC CGC title.  Lori is hopeful that by fall, Claire will be certified as a therapy dog so they can resume visits to the nursing home where Reese and Lori had visited before Reese’s untimely death due to a brainstem tumor in March 2012.
For this year’s quilt, Lori gave up making an individual block so she could volunteer to make the awning shop and building signs for all the blocks, with her good friend and machine embroidery mentor, Cindy Johnstonbaugh.  Working for several days in Cindy’s sewing room, each at their machine, Cindy and Lori together embroidered the signs for each of the shops and buildings lining the streets of the Airedales Around Town quilt

Christie Williams

Michigan, USA

I have a real soft spot in my heart for Rescue Airedales, since I fostered a couple of Rescues and adopted Erin in 1999.  During the next 7 years Erin and I competed in Agility, Obedience and Rally and earned 20 titles in those sports!  Erin was a wonderful girl who I will miss always. Erin's story, half written by her first owners and half written by me, can be found at "Edith/Erin".
Our current dogs are Argus, a cuddly 11-year old boy, Cait, a 2-year old and Cava, Cait’s 7 month old daughter. They enjoy zooming around the house together and doing cute dog tricks to convince me to give them treats. They are a lot of fun and keep me busy.  I now compete in Agility, Competition Obedience and Rally with Cait.
Right before Erin came to live with us in 1999, I joined the fledgling Airedale Quilting Bee.  We have been making quilts to benefit Airedale Rescue for 11 years now.  It is wonderful to be able to share my two passions, quilting and Airedales, with other women who feel the same.
My biggest function in this group is to help with the artistic side of the quilt.  I sometimes design the general setting of the quilt when it is to be one large picture such as “Friends for Life”, “Annette’s House” and the “Circus” quilt.  I draw pictures that become patterns for some of the blocks and I write guidelines for making and designing the blocks.  I have assembled several of the quilt tops and have even quilted a few. This year I made the “S” block.
In real life, I am a USDA Scientist and Professor of Entomology (creepy crawly bugs) at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.  My lab does research on wheat genes that defend the plant against attack by the Hessian fly. In addition to hugging Airedales and quilting, my hobbies include training for and competing in dog agility and obedience and rally, teaching agility classes, playing hammer dulcimer, hiking in the woods and canoe camping with my Airedales and my husband Greg.
