Rehomed Airedale

Sir Miles Doo Bop is sort of an unusual Rescuedale by almost any standard. The picture of Miles shows him with Annette Hall and her own dog Dozie on one of their visits to our cottage in northern Michigan.

Miles was rescued by Sandi Sprankle from his Vet's kennel near Cleveland, Ohio, where he had lived for many months after the death of his mistress. Annette Hall brought Miles to us on the evening before St. Patrick's Day in 1999. This was an emergency foster favor for Annette that turned into a permanent home for our dear Miles. Miles immediately took to Mike and there was no question that Miles was going to stay with us after the first few hours.

Miles is huge. About 30 inches at shoulders, weighs about 95 pounds and is not fat, his paws are capable of covering a CDROM and webbed. When we got Miles, he was 5 years old and turned 6 on April 2nd after we got him. I was able to research Miles' history and talked with his life long Vet, groomer, and breeder. We had his entire history at our disposal. This is most unusual for a Rescue'dale.

Miles has had many medical problems. The lower left fang that he used for opening doors, got broken at the tip. It abscessed and infected his jaw over the years. That needed to be fixed! He developed eye cancer in his left eye and that eye had to be removed. Miles, being huge, put lots of stress on his knees. He blew out both knees at once and the ligaments of both knees needed to be repaired surgically. On top of all that, Miles' adrenal glands and thyroid gland don't produce enough hormones for his body, so he is on supplements for thyroid and cortisone to make up for the shortage. This last fall, of his 10th year, he almost died due to a bleeding stomach and GI tract due to a virus infection. We again nursed him back to health.

When we first got Miles, he was a handful. His jaw hurt him so much that he did not sleep. He was very cranky to say the least. Miles does NOT do pain well, which is unusual for an Airedale. On top of that, the hormone problems gave him a bad attitude.

Today, Miles, who will turn 11 years in April is as healthy and happy as he has ever been. His head to toe physical examinations and tests and xrays last fall show him to be A-OK and running like a top. Miles adores life and is finally really enjoying himself. He sleeps like a log and snores which is music to our ears!
