Past Coverdale
On my drive home from work last November, I was randomly scanning radio stations
and it just happened that a local pet store commercial that sometimes features
local SPCA's rescue information was on... and I heard that the SPCA in Newport News
had an Airedale. Our beloved family Airedale, Barney, a happy part of my growing up
years, had long since passed away.
The next day, I immediately stopped by the
SPCA. As the door to the dog area opened I was immediately innundated with barking
dogs. Curiously Mitzi wasn't barking but she was trying to sit up in her wire crate to
see me. She looked so regal. When the SPCA assistant took her out of the wire crate,
Mitzi took my breath away... I had never seen such a skinny dog. You could literally
place you hand up under her rib cage. The SPCA assistant thought she was about 3 years old.
All through my visit, Mitzi never stopped smiling and never stopped wagging her tail...
and - you guessed it - it was just love at first sight! When I asked how Mitzi arrived
at the SPCA, I was told that a family turned her in saying she was just too hard to
handle - and... the family refused to give her name. The SPCA worked miracles in order
for me to adopt outside the Newport News area. Mitzi was spayed before she was allowed to return
home with me. All of Mitzi's SPCA and veterinary paperwork say "no name Crittenden" as her name.
The vet said that Mitzi was probably only about six months old.
My mom, suffering from Alzheimer's,
and my dad, her primary caregiver, were in dire need of some happiness. Mitzi pays regular visits
to my dad and mom's home... everyone who sees Mitzi lights up. She is just terrific and a true
blessing to my family. Her appearance today is one of a happy, healthy Airedale - she has
regained all of her lost weight and she never fails to smile and wag her tail... she seems to
be so grateful to finally have a home with a loving family... and Mitzi is truly a part
of our family... she is our pride and joy!
Sincerely,
Denise Crittenden
