Rescue and Breeders

Good breeders accept responsibility for dogs they produce and take them back if they need help, re-evaluating and placing them in suitable new homes. Irresponsible breeders fail to live up to their end of the bargain and don't care what happens to their puppies once they are sold. Some dogs' backgrounds are never known, but good bloodlines run through many rescue dogs. So many of these Airedales are handsome, frequently under long and matted coats, and each one shines, both in spirit and appearance, with grooming. The transformation is astounding. Even more impressive are their temperaments, most often very appreciative of at last ending up in the hands of "Airedale people" who understand them.

By virtue of membership in the ATCA, every ATCA Breeder is bound by the ATCA Code of Ethics, which includes:
Educating and informing prospective purchasers of the personality and idiosyncrasies of the Airedale, both positive and negative. Breeders should screen potential buyers for their suitability as Airedale owners, and refuse to sell either a puppy or an adult dog to a home that is unsuitable, thus maximizing the chance of a successful placement, and minimizing the chance of the Airedale being returned to the breeder. Breeders must be willing to educate buyers in puppy care, grooming and training and be a source of ongoing advice and assistance in all areas, helping the buyer in every reasonable and customary way, for the life of the dog.

and

Being willing and able to fully assist in re-homing any dog of their breeding at any time, without prejudice, for any reason, for the life of the dog. Such breeder assistance and involvement should continue until the situation is satisfactorily resolved. Any ATCA member who has any knowledge whatsoever of an Airedale in need of re-homing, whose breeder is also an ATCA member, is required to notify that breeder of the dogs situation, so that the breeders obligation can be fulfilled.

When working with rescue cases, every effort will be made to determine the breeder of the dog, and if the breeder is a member of the Airedale Terrier Club of America (ATCA Breeder), all pertinent information shall be transmitted to the Chair of the Rescue Committee. The volunteer in custody of the dog may notify the breeder directly. If necessary, the Chair will notify the ATCA Breeder using the Breeder Notification Form so that the ATCA Breeder's obligation can be fulfilled.

At the sole discretion of the Airedale Rescue volunteers having custody of the ATCA Breeder's dog, the ATCA Breeder may be given the option of cooperating with the Rescue Volunteers in rehoming the dog in full satisfaction of the ATCA Breeder's responsibility to the dog. In this case, the ATCA Breeder will assume responsibility for all expenses incurred by the dog until it is placed in a new home, and all guidelines for Owned Dogs will apply. When the ATCA Breeder and Airedale Rescue volunteers cooperate and work together to place the Airedale Terrier in the best home for that individual dog, there will be no stigma or judgment placed on this joint decision, which works for the good of all. Breeders should understand that volunteers may not be in a position to assist the breeder in rehoming the dog.

In the event that a breeder does not accept full responsibility for the rescue, care, and rehoming of an Airedale Terrier of their breeding, the Rescue Network shall assume that responsibility.

The Rescue Committee shall report to the ATCA Board of Directors all known ATCA Breeder dogs that enter the rescue program and the breeder's response to notification.

Airedale Rescue volunteers may or may not, in their sole discretion, notify non-ATCA Breeders of any Airedale Terriers known to be of their breeding that enter the rescue program, assuming the breeder has no legal ownership interest in the dog.
