Owned Dogs
Keeping in mind that the welfare of the dog is of primary importance, the following guidelines are
suggested in connection with dogs whose owners wish to place them with Airedale Rescue:
- The owner should be encouraged to contact the breeder and owner
of the sire to take responsibility for care and placement.
- The dog involved should be legally signed over to the volunteer
with a written bill of transfer/sale including the statement that no other person has any legal claim
to the dog, and complete AKC registration forms obtained where applicable. These dogs should never be
purchased/bought. There must be a clearly stated understanding that the dog's surrender is permanent
and irrevocable.
- The dog's former owner should be encouraged to have the dog
spayed or neutered prior to the placement.
- The dog's former owner should be encouraged to pay something
toward the expenses related to re-homing this dog (a month's supply of food, an Airedale-sized crate
in good condition or $100.00 are possibilities).
- Volunteers should make no promises to the former owners about
the dog's eventual placement, nor hope to let the previous owner visit with the dog or contact the adopter.
- This policy recognizes that, in cases where an Airedale Terrier
is unwanted by its owner, it may eventually be sent by its owner to a pound or shelter, where it will
become a Rescue responsibility. It is also in danger of being sold to an inappropriate home and an
unsuitable dog may be used for breeding. It may also be placed in a situation which presents a danger
to the dog, the breed or the public. In these cases, it is recognized that it is better for all concerned
that the dog come into the jurisdiction of Rescue before
substantial harm has occurred to the dog, the breed or the public.
