A Good Samaritan retrieved the dog from the side of a highway in Arizona. June of 2002 was the third warmest on record ... 17 consecutive days of daily highs 105 degrees F. or higher ... and the dog was in full dreadlocks. To provide some relief from the heat, the finder chopped the dog's hair off and at that point realized (1) it was a girl, (2) she was probably a purebred Airedale and (3) there was something very wrong with her left rear leg. Since the finder had 14 other dogs she had rescued, she tracked down the local Airedale Rescue volunteer, who named the Airedale "Desert Rose" for her beautiful face. Rose appeared to be about 2 years old and was very underweight ... hips and ribs and backbone all sticking out prominently. X-rays showed the hip socket was fractured completely through in three places, but luckily, because her hips are well formed, the ball had remained in the socket. However, the entire hip joint was rotated. She had a cracked pelvis and a fracture just above the knee. The fracture at the knee had healed well, but the leg bent to the left at that point. The vet said the fractures occurred approximately a year earlier and that it happened just slightly before she had finished growing (so, probably when she was 12 to 18 months old). Despite the severe injuries, she had remarkable range of motion, good muscle tone and showed no pain. She was extremely fast -- running, jumping, spinning, playbowing. But, the prognosis was significant degeneration and arthritis in the hip because of the pressure created by the deformity at the knee. Click here to read the rest of the story ...
