Past CoverDale

Here's Sally, my rescue dale I got from Elizabeth Berry, coordinator for Virginia Airedale Rescue, in December 2001. She was a stray picked up wandering and brought to a shelter near Richmond. Sally was probably an outdoor dog. When we first got her and would let her outside in our yard (about an acre fenced) last thing before bed, she would "disappear" into the yard and not come back inside. We would go out and look for her, calling, but she wouldn't come up to us. We were so saddened to find that she thought being put out at night meant time to go to sleep...outside. She would scratch up some dirt in the shelter of some trees and curl up. We would find her and guide her back inside where she had the choice of cuddling in her bagel bed beside us or on the warm waterbed with us. It took about a month to truly get her to understand she could sleep safe and warm inside. It's amazing how much progress she made in the first year. So I would encourage everyone to give their new family member enough time to adjust. Needless to say, we love her to pieces.
