Bowser Comello

bowser comello

Bowser came into our lives in October 2015 as a foster from Airedale Rescue Group. Surrendered by his owner, he was 6 years old, unkempt, and heartworm positive. We saw him through his heartworm treatments, and he won over our hearts with his gentlemanly ways. We happily “failed” at being fosters and became his forever home!

Over the next four years, Bowser’s companionship enriched our family in so many ways. He came on road trips with us and gave us lots to laugh about. He had the persuasion skills of a Jedi master. He sent kids off to college and became the reason they called home. Meanwhile, in the kids’ absence, he gave me and my husband something to “fuss over,” simultaneously keeping the peace and luxuriating in our attention.

My fondest memories of him are on our daily walks. Because of joint issues, he could never go very fast, so I learned to slow down and better appreciate the things around me. These meditative forest walks could erase the whole day’s frustrations. (Sometimes the walks were interrupted by his sightings of owls and other large birds. He then unleashed barks that resounded like cannon fire!)

Around his 10th birthday, he was diagnosed with melanoma, and it progressed very quickly despite surgery and treatments. We are heartbroken that his time with us was so short, but it was rich beyond measure. Bowser, thank you for the memories and profound life lessons. We send our love to you over the Rainbow Bridge, where we know you are with your predecessors Hector and Sadie, in the place where forever families reunite. – Nori, Joe, Jacob, and Lucy Comello

Sir Samuel of Bradford (Brad)
May 16 1989 -- March 1 2004

He was my life fiber and one of my first rescues. The love of my life. One of the dogs that comes in to your life that was special. My demo dog at 125 lbs. 29 inches at the withers. The dog that would and could do anything for therapy, obedience, tracking and the big boy that was my logo and on the quilt with a campaign hat

A big smile always greeted me and he would cry when I did. He would herd the rescue dogs back from anywhere they were not supposed to go and would stop fights if they ever occurred. Just a special dog -- my heart dog.

Bryllo

In February of 1991, we picked Victoria out of the litter because she had the tiniest little white patch of fur on one of her front paws which differentiated her from the rest. We brought her home and knew that we just couldn't keep her given name of Victoria because her personality just didn't fit the name. After consulting many relatives and coming up with a lot of names ourselves, we decided on Bryllo, like the Brillo pad, because of her wirey fur. The breeders didn't care for it much, but through the years, all her goofy antics solidified that we gave her the right name.

Always into trouble, we got into the habit of putting something heavy on the garbage basket so she couldn't get into it and putting our shoes away so she couldn't sneak in some recreational chewing. We also learned that if you put your food too close to the edge of the counter, you will lose it. Despite all her troublemaking and high jinks, all she had to do was tilt her head and look at you with those big brown eyes and any anger you had would melt. She used her Airedale charm to the fullest.

This photo is just one of many that we have that shows how she made us laugh almost everyday. She would love to pull toilet paper or paper towel rolls out of the garbage to chew on, so we started to play back by sticking them on her tail because they would fit perfectly. Sometimes she'd catch on right away, sometimes she wouldn't, but she would always then chase her tail and pull the cardboard tube off. We just couldn't believe when she actually looked right into the camera with it on. Of course, shortly after this was taken, she pulled it off.

We feel lucky to have shared our lives with her for 14 years, well beyond any of our expectations. She truly showed that terrier spunk right up to her last moments with us, and has an irreplaceable spot in our hearts.

Thanks again for giving me an opportunity to memorialize Bryllo. She was very special to me!

Missy and Brodie
Brodie (right) and Missy

Brodie of New Mexico
Circa 1995 - 2005

Brodie's story is a sad one save for the last year of his life. Brodie had lived chained outside a run down mobile home for most of his life. When the home was abandoned we were called to come get Brodie and his little friend Missy. What a horrible sight it was but we all know the Airedale resilience and Brodie and Missy jumped in the car eagerly anticipating their new life.

From sketchy vet records we obtained we knew Brodie was 10 and Missy's age was unknown but the vet thought she was about the same age. Brodie and Missy came to live at what we fondly refer to as Duff's Dale Dude Ranch. From early spring and into the summer Brodie and Missy lived as foster dogs with my husband and myself. They enjoyed the cool mountain air and lots of space to play but most of all they loved coming in the house and would leap into their crates every night at bedtime. Because they were so attached to each other (especially Brodie) we felt it was not fair or in their best interest to separate them. As a result we had few inquiries about adopting the pair.

Then an Airedale Angel came along, Trisha Theodore. Trisha, a long time Airedale Rescue volunteer, is the savior of senior Airedales having previously adopted another senior, only to lose her to cancer. Trisha took Brodie and Missy into her home in the fall and two Airedales have never been happier. Trisha catered to their every need with new beds, regular grooming, wonderful meals and a doggy door so they could come in and out as they pleased. But most of all she heaped love and attention on them.

It takes a very special person to devote heart, mind and soul to the care of our aging Airedale companions. She gave Brodie the very best, which allowed him to be affectionate and playful up to the very end.

A fellow rescuer said this about Trisha and those like her:

"People who can take in the old ones and allow their hearts to be broken over and over in order to give the oldsters the blessing of a good life for their last days, however many or few, are the special angels of rescue."

We extend our affection and admiration to Trisha and all those like her who give so much to creatures who have had so little.

With Trisha and Brodie in mind we want to establish a memorial for Brodie and all the seniors like him. Please consider a donation however small. All donations will go into the Airedale Senior Fund rescue project.

Ce'sar came to us weighing only 6 pounds and was the weakest pup of the litter we got from the shelter. He was close to death more than once so we have been so very thankful for every day of the 8+ years he has been with us. Despite medical problems he had tremendous heart. He was the supreme Airedale ambassador.  Handsome and with the gentlest temperament...he made many friends, made many adoption home visits and greeted a multitude of foster dogs. He was a soul mate and constant companion.

We so miss you Ce'sar.
